Again, how does attacking legitimately owned guns stop crime? Are my guns sneaking out at night out of a locked gun cabinet and committing crimes on their own? Why not just enforce the laws on the books against criminals using guns, and leave honest people's guns alone?

I await details of Mr. Markells' "common sense" measures. I am skeptical that they will prove to be either "common" or "sensible".

I note, in passing, that only one comment has so far appeared here. As I write this, it is the evening of September 17th / morning of the 18th.

I wonder why this is.

Mr. Markell,

Since the right to keep and bear arms is a specifically enumerated, constitutionally guaranteed right like the freedom of speech, right to assemble, etc; would you support the same restrictions on those other rights?

Restricting the right to assemble would prevent gangs from being able to form, so it would reduce violence?
How about freedom of speech, would you support the right to only have 1 conversation a month? This would reduce arguments, conflicts-prime causes of assaults.

Based on these two examples, it is easy to see how radical of the limitation on our rights you are proposing.
Also, does your bulk purchase include state and local law enforcement personnel and departments?
(Recent audits show the Federal Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Agency lost 76 handguns.)

The biggest impact will be in getting repeat offenders off the street. Having tighter rules, especially limited to a small area will do almost nothing to reduce criminal guns, but it will restrict the law-abiding. The definition of "gun show loophole" I'm most familiar with is that the rules there are the same as everywhere else. The FBI says that hardly any criminal guns are bought from gun shows, so I don't see how eliminating gun shows will help

If you want to get tough on gun crime how about looking at the criminal instead of going after lawful gun owners with more feel good laws that will not stop the crimes.

You want to stop the crimes then get the criminals in jail when they are caught. Stop putting them back on the street. Set up mandatory harsh sentences for gun use in a crime and stick with them! Criminals will not follow these laws either but they like them, disarming the law abiding folks makes their criminal jobs much safer. . . Gun control has failed, time to look for a different fix.

"His plan includes getting repeat offenders off the streets"

That's what needs to be focused on, but KEEP them off the streets! BTW, there's no such thing as "gun violence" since guns are inantimate objects and have no will of their own. PEOPLE commit violent acts.

Everything else proposed is'nt going to impact crime at all as anyone who can do basic research should know. All it'll do is make things tough for honest people because criminals ignore such laws.

Gun control; what you do instead of something effective, like acually punishing real criminals.
