Jack Markell will spend the last leg of the campaign helping local candidates seize the House majority and expand their influence in the Senate.

For the next three days, Jack will campaign with Bryon Short, shake hands will Bob Walls and make phone calls for Earl Jaques. Jack has spent months traveling up and down the state bringing his plans for universal health care, fantastic schools and 25,000 new high-paying jobs to Delawareans. This weekend, Jack will make a final round of campaign stops - this time with local candidates - in a joint effort to bring a unified message of change to the voters.

Jack and Democratic representatives and candidates at the Delaware Historical Society

Jack Markell, House Minority Leader Robert Gilligan and other Democratic representatives and candidates joined together Monday to describe their historic plans for change.

“Delaware voters are clamoring for change, and that’s what Democrats will give them,” Markell said. “Our state is a great place, but it is not going to remain that way if we do not act boldly to go in a new direction. I am proud to be here with Democrats who are dedicated to delivering historic change.”

Each Democrat stepped forward to describe their plans to move forward and join with Jack to create jobs, strengthen our schools and create affordable health care for all Delawareans. Jack and the group of Democrats also denounced the negative campaign tactics of the Republicans, calling their strategy “more of the same.”

“Jack Markell and the Democratic legislative candidates have laid out bold plans to create jobs, establish a world-class education system and expand access to quality, affordable health care – and I can’t wait to get to Dover and start making those proposals a reality,” said House Minority Leader Robert Gilligan. “What have the Republicans proposed? Nothing. All they seem to be able to do is make dirty attacks against Democrats – that’s not change, it’s more of the same.”

State Treasurer Jack Markell released the following statement Thursday in reaction to Chrysler’s decision to close its Newark plant Dec. 31:

“The closure of Chrysler’s Newark Assembly plant — particularly its sudden acceleration by one year — is a huge blow for its workers, their families and our community. The plant’s employees are hard workers, and a great asset to Delaware. Those employees have my sympathy, and my commitment to do all I can as governor to help them.

Today’s announcement from Chrysler is another example of how the national economy is hurting Delaware families. We can give them the help they need by taking our economy in a new direction. We must focus on creating high-wage jobs, a more hospitable economic environment and a trained workforce to provide the skilled employees Delaware companies need to grow.

I have detailed plans: setting out my commitment to growing jobs, enabling new businesses — small and large — to thrive in Delaware, and most importantly training and retraining Delaware workers for employment in this changing economy. That is the kind of change Delaware needs.”

Sen. Carper speaks at the press conference on Monday

Jack Markell and Matt Denn released the Markell-Denn administration’s plan to promote mentoring and business-school partnerships Monday at the Shop Rite in Newport.

Sen. Tom Carper, who had just come from mentoring a student, also joined in the press conference to praise Jack and Matt’s mentoring plans that build on initial mentoring programs he began as governor in the 1990s.

The initiative, which Matt will lead as Lieutenant Governor, will ask businesses to encourage their employees to mentor a child. Matt said he would hope to have at least 10 business-school partnerships started in 2009. Representatives of Delaware Supermarkets, Inc., NKS Distributors and the Buccini-Pollin Group took part in Monday’s announcement and are interested in taking part in the new program.

“Delaware will not have a world-class economy without having a world-class school system. That’s why the Markell-Denn administration is committed to creating an education system where every child arrives ready to learn and every teenager graduates ready to succeed in the job market or in higher education. It’s not just teachers and administrators and parents who need to pitch in, we need the whole community to help out. My wife and I have seen firsthand how serving as a mentor can change a young person’s life and give a child a better future. I urge all Delawareans to take some time out of your day or week to help children in need. The rewards – for you and the child — can last a lifetime.”

With just a little over two weeks to go before the election on November 4, Jack spent the weekend talking to Delawareans about his plans for the state and the importance of this election.

On Saturday, Jack talked with many people about the election at the University of Delaware Homecoming tailgates. In addition, Jack reconnected with people from his childhood in Newark, along with people he has met along the campaign trail. Jack then went on the field and participated in the coin toss.

Jack greets Delawareans at UD’s Homecoming tailgates

After being at the Homecoming game, Jack stood with Darryl Scott, candidate for State Representative in the 31st District, and shook hands with customers of the Acme Supermarket in Dover. Jack spoke with shoppers about the issues we face in this election, and told voters that Darryl will make a great state representative.

Jack then went to an energizing event that supporters held for him in Townsend, where he was joined by a number of other candidates. In his remarks to the approximately 75 people in attendance, Jack spoke about the importance of talking to neighbors, knocking on doors, making phone calls, and contributing money in order to spread the word about how important this election is, and how important it is to elect candidates who have the vision, the ideas, and the plans to make our state even better!

Jack and ACORN Director Darlene Battle discuss the Home SAFE Plan

Jack Markell announced his Home SAFE (Strategies to Avoid Foreclosure through Education) Plan Friday in front of the home of Ruthie Edwards, a Wilmington resident facing foreclosure.

Joined by candidate for insurance commissioner Karen Weldin Stewart and ACORN leaders, Jack described the main components of his plan to reduce foreclosures. Jack’s plan highlights how he will encourage mortgage lenders to explore all other options before foreclosure, explore the state’s ability to offer low-interest refinance loans, help families receive foreclosure prevention loans with flexible writing standards, provide silent second mortgages and use federal assistance to expand Delaware’s Emergency Mortgage Assistant Program.

“Foreclosures hurt everyone involved – the homeowner, the bank, the neighborhood and the economy,” Markell said. “Other states are taking bold action to help their homeowners, and Delaware must join them. We simply must keep homeowners best interests in mind.”

Jack and John Carney during the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner

Jack Markell and Delaware’s leading Democrats came together Monday night for the annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner at Dover Downs. It was a fantastic night that centered around party unity and a much anticipated speech by Senator Joe Biden, the first Delawarean to be a major party’s vice presidential nominee.

With just a few weeks left until the general election, Democrats have a strong chance of sweeping offices from the White House to the House of Representatives in Dover.

“We Democrats are offering a recipe for change based on real ideas not more rhetoric,” Jack said.

“For the first time, I have included my policies in a book - A Blueprint for a Better Delaware – which gives details Delawareans deserve to know about my agenda for the next four years. Voters will reject negative dirty politics if you give them a clear choice and that’s what we are doing.”

“And in a time of crisis like we face today, that’s what our country and our state need.”

“I make one commitment to you tonight – should I be successful on November 4th, I will do the best I can every day to make sure that as Delaware comes out of this economic storm, we are well positioned to be a national leader in creating jobs, ensuring access to affordable healthcare, and making sure our kids get the best public education in the world.”
