Governor Jack Markell: New Ideas and Real Change for Delaware

Protecting Civil Rights of Each Citizen

It’s a shame Delaware couldn’t lead on civil rights rather than waiting for Washington to act on civil rights legislation.

From the New York times online:

“WASHINGTON, Nov. 7 - The House approved a bill this evening granting broad protections against discrimination in the workplace for gay men, lesbians and bisexuals, a measure that supporters praised as the most important civil rights legislation since the adoption of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990 but that opponents said would result in unnecessary lawsuits.”

The House of Representatives down in Washington got something right when they passed this legislation, and they deserve to be congratulated. I sincerely hope the Senate Democrats can follow in line and pass an equally strong bill.

This summer, I urged my fellow Delawareans to support SB 141, the Senate bill prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation, and started an online petition as a venue for voicing that support.

Nine-hundred and thirty-six individuals signed up.

Delaware needs to be a leader across the board, and we must be a leader in protecting the civil rights of each citizen. It’s time for us to pass legislation similar to SB 141.
